Course Objectives:
- Understand the pathophysiology of periodontal disease and local contributory factors
- Understand what periodontal disease looks like clinically and radiographically
- Review fundamentals of scaling and root planing
- Overview of different scalers and curettes and their structure
- Selecting correct instruments for different locations in the mouth
- Maintaining and sharpening instruments
- Methods of calculus detection and how to ensure adequate removal of plaque and calculus is achieved
- Understand the biology of healing after scaling and root planing
- Developing a treatment plan algorithm and decide when to refer a patient with an advanced disease

- Diagnosis and classification of periodontal disease (demystifying the new classification of periodontal and periimplant disease)
- Etiology and contributory factors to periodontal disease initiation and progression, how to diagnose them and what clinical data collection must be done to formulate the accurate diagnosis.
- Deciding the next step based on your diagnosis (treat or refer) and evaluate choices of treatment strategies and how they meet periodontal health goals.
- Communication tips and tricks to bring awareness for your patients about their chronic condition and how it can affect their overall health.
- Association between periodontal pathogens and systemic diseases.
- Non-surgical periodontal therapy, scaling and root planing and what to expect with this modality of treatment.
- The importance of the periodontal maintenance program.
